İzmir Şirince is a touristic village with preserved historical architecture, 8 kilometers from Selçuk, in the Selçuk district of İzmir. It is rumored that its original name Kırkınca was given in reference to forty people who hit the mountains in a legendary age. This name, which took forms such as Kirkice, Kirkince and finally Çirkince in Greek pronunciation, was formalized as Şirince in the first years of the Republic with the instruction of Kazım Dirik, the governor of İzmir at the time. In 1923, after the Greeks left as a result of the population exchange between Turkey and Greece, the village was settled with immigrants from the villages of Müştiyan and Somokol in Kavala. The village's economy, which was previously based on viticulture, wine production and olive cultivation, was interrupted for a while by the new inhabitants from a tobacco region, but in recent years, in parallel with its increasing touristic importance, these sectors have started to develop again. In addition to viticulture and olive cultivation, peaches, figs, apples and walnuts are grown. The population of the village, which was around 2000-3000 in the 1950s and then decreased to 700, has entered into an upward trend again with the development of tourism since the 1990s. Some Greek houses still serve as hostels in the village.
Among the places to visit in Izmir Şirince are the following:
Lion Road: The Lion Road, which is the first place you encounter at the entrance to the village, is a street where you pass between two lion statues and reach the village square. Here you can find souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants.
Wine Cellars: You can visit the wine cellars in the village to taste wine, the most famous product of Şirince. Here you can try wines made from fruits such as apple, pomegranate, quince, cherry as well as classic grape wines.
Kocabas Mosque: Koçabaş Mosque, located in the village square, was built as a church by Greeks in the 19th century and converted into a mosque in 1924. The frescoes inside the mosque and the cross motifs outside are worth seeing.
Demirci Girl House: Demirci Kız Evi, one of the oldest houses in the village, was built in the 18th century. The story of the owner of the house, Ayşe Kadın, nicknamed Demirci Kız, is also quite interesting. After the death of her husband, Ayşe made a living as a blacksmith and earned the respect of the villagers. The furnishings inside the house also reflect the lifestyle of the period.
Mathematics Village: Located about 2 kilometers away from Şirince, the Mathematics Village is an educational center founded by mathematician Ali Nesin. Summer schools, seminars and workshops are organized here for math lovers. The architectural design of the Mathematics Village was done by Sevan Nişanyan.
